Sessions Covered: Introduction to Web 2; Tagging; RSS; Blogs & Wikis; Multimedia; Social Bookmarking & Social Networking.
Group Discussion: discuss some ideas on how LIS could use Web 2.0 technology.
-
Social Bookmarking – useful for collecting & sharing links, in Blackboard (BB) maybe. Good for supporting students, sending out links.
-
Careers: Employers talks made available as videos. Students sharing experience of interviews with a particular employer also.
-
Careers: Blogs - useful for work placements for careers for feedback; students work collaboratively on a project = good experience to use in workplace later.
-
Wikis = useful for LIS procedures. Work collaboratively and teach us how to use wikis.
-
Use web 2.0 for students off-campus: e.g. Wiki on BB: use for FAQs, record answers to emailed questions. Can also use for peer support.
-
Careers: investigating incorporating tagging into a traditional database indexed system.
-
1st year students may already use web 2 tools for social purposes but may not understand implications for academic use.
-
LIS Tekkies already use wikis for procedures.
-
-
Wikis: could be used for academic liaison. Collaborate with academics to post up resources: consequently learn more ideas on their interests and research.
-
Need to identify a need or problem that needs solving rather than focussing on the specific technology. e.g Uni of Newport: providing web 2 services but just provide a space rather than calling it blogs & Wikis.
-
Issue of using different software: would we lose “corporate identity” and standards? Marketing aspect vs. teaching / learning. In BB all courses can look very different cf University website.
-
All should try to use and learn about these tools within own job so that can spread knowledge to users: good for collaboration, knowledge management. Distinguish social vs work-related use of tools?
-
Is a central place needed to list all web 2 tools being used within the university? How do we let people know what we are doing and do we want them to know?
-
Copyright: assumption that material has already been cleared by the submitter, placing the responsibility on them.
-
In work context, need for departmental agreement on tools and standardized platforms.
-
Web 2 = “all the work we currently do with more work on top”? e.g. putting papers in an institutional repository: do we let academics do it, do we wish to monitor it?
-
Should not try to manipulate / manage how people use web 2: let them use resources how they want, just provide advice.
-
Do librarians do it better? Can the 2 co-exist? What is the need for professional support?
-
Many nationalities, learning styles etc. within university. Not all students are digital natives. Also conceptual skills.
National service at UKERNA: all unis, colleges & schools, end May. Aim to allow people (educators) with similar interests to find each other online, international. Content providers can advertise their sessions. Build a profile. No name as yet!
